Review: Hotel Bürgerhof (Cologne, Germany)

So I was in Cologne over the Christmas days, and to give myself and everyone else some more freedom and space during thos elovely but fully packed and partially stressful days, I decided to book myself into a hotel. And as my aunt was already staying there, the decision was easy.

My mum had picked up my keys already on the day of arrival – on the one hand great that it´s possible, on the other hand a bit odd if you think about the fact that only the surname made picking up the name possible…ah well, let´s not put too much weight onto that but still.

So let´s start with the room – my room hadn´t been used for a while I guess, at leats it felt like it due to the the smel – opening the window rather quickly changed that, so it was all good in the end. The hotelroom was spacey and had a double bed, plenty of space for storing things and everything was just perfectly fine size-wise.

The bed itself was…a bit too soft for myself, but I git used to it quickly – and since my back didn´t complain, and sleeping on the sides, on my belly and on the back felt pretty good, I was positively surprised. I didn´t expect that I was gonna sleep quite well in there when I sat down on it and tested the mattress. Bedlinen was okay, but finding something to bitch about it would be generally rather tough 😉

Space-wise, the bathroom was totally okay, just the bits of mold in the shower were not making me too happy as I am always easily feeling turned off by such things. It´s hilarious how sensitive I am even about the smallest bits of it, but that´s me. The shower also was a bit funny – first time I was standing in there and turned on the water, it nearly blew me away because the water pressure was full power all of a sudden 😀

So the room overall – hardly anything to complain, especially since it´s not been the hotel´s falt that I was simply too dumb to be able to turn on the TV (that even had Sky). I simply failed even though having read the instructions, but in the end I didn´t have any tme anyways and instead enjoyed the silence. Talking about silence  it´s been lovely silent during nighttime, I wouldn´t even have needed my earplugs.

After sleep comes…yes, breakfast! A small little buffet that had everything you needed – tea, coffee, water, juices…and the bread rolls of different kinds, croissants and then the normal stuff you find on buffets. I would´ve loved to have some cereals but as the milk was with lactose, same for the yoghurt, I decided on ditching it since with all the food in general my body had enough struggles to facce. So also that was totally fine, all good!

Last but not least – the staff I met was polite and nice, I felt well there. So overall – if I was in need of a hotel in that area again, I´d clearly be returning!

fem.box

There´s times where I am pretty lucky in regards of raffles, and so on Facebook I won this box – not a beauty box, rather a lifestyle/beauty/wellness/fitness box which is just the right thing for me.  I liked the look of the boy, that color splash like outlook of the box is simple but attractive. Yet I was surprised that the wrapping paper inside was black, which doesn´t match anymore – but you know that I like black, so 😉

What I reall didn´t like is that what we received as a prize is the box from December, so totally nothing up to date or anything. Yes I know it´s for free but still, I am used to actually getting one of the latest boxes instead.

Max Factor – Facefinity Compact Foundation

Simply Chai – Simply Chai Spicy
I´ve already been drinking Chai quite a while ago, still during my studies back in Finland, after one of my hosts had turned me into it. And back in the days I really enjoyed it, so I was really curious how this is gonna taste as it´s a spicy version of the “normal” Chai – it was okay, but nothing that I would personally by for myself, as the normal one is more of my cup of tea 😉

Dr. Severin – Woman Original Body Aftershave Balsam
When I opened the bottle and squeezed the liquid/balm/gel onto my hand, the smell really tourned me off – it´s extremely strong, and it feels like you pour parfume over yourself – though parfume is not on the top ingredients. But still, massive smell, and a smell that is rather masculine than feminine as it feels heavy. It nicely cools the shaved areas, yet I wouldn´t use it on any shaved body part.

Kneipp – Back & Neck Balsam with grapple plant
Generally I´ve always been a fan of stuff from Kneipp, and this balm for the neck and back to losen stuff muscles is no exception, even though it´s not my first choice in this case. It works pretty well, and feels good on the skin – no irritated skin, no burning, nothing. And it works, my neck really did feel better after using it.

4711 Acqua Colonia – Lime & Nutmeg Shower Gel
To be honest, I cannot say anything about it as I have it away to someone as a present – I still have tons of other shower gels so…

Twisterz – Plastic bands
Well, at first I really thought that this was some beauty crap for wrapping around your hair or stuff, and was annoyed. But then I figured it´s for wrapping around cables, which is kinda cool – first off that it saves the cable and secondly that you can easily then recognize your cable in case you and someoen else have the same kind of cables. Nothing that I waited for, but it works, looks funny and is fine.

Workout water – Stay Fresh with elder taste
Th ehype about BCAA drinks is clearly something that I also watch as I am working out quite a bit, and there are surely products that make sense to consume after sports – with this drink nevertheless I struggle. And that has several reasons: foremost it has lactose in it, which makes it for me risky as I have no idea how much actually is in there and how many body reacts on it, especially after a workout that might be stressful. In addition – the taste. It is totally oversweetened and I feel like dying from a sugar shock, it is too much for me, and the overall taste is really totally not my cup of tea!

Voucher: Yogaeasy – Online Yoga
I will be trying this in June, so I cannot really write a review on it yet – because I wanna test it properly and not just write about the very first tiny impression ^^

Hotel ibis Toulouse Centre

It´s been a while since my boyfriend and I were in Toulouse, but since I am in the mood for wanderlust, instead of planning another trip, I am looking back to Toulouse and the stay at the Ibis Hotel.

Chain hotels are usually a safe thing to book in foreign cities, and our stay clearly proved us right – you just know those hotels have a certain standard, and that´s been the case here aswell.

It was easy to find the the way to the hotel, even though there were no signs – probably because it really was close to the centre, and from there you were able to walk everywhere in the city. Located in a side-street, the hotel was quite silent, unless you hadd assholes in rooms that are connected to your air condition pipes and you can listen to them fighting, crying and smell them smoking. This clearly is something they should work on, even though I am aware of it being complicated. At least the people at the reception were always nice and helpful, definitely a pluspoint!

The room itself was a bit small in the entrance area – you kinda against the door or the little wardrobe when going in there, so yeah…this clearly wasn´t done too well, but anyways. The bed itself was comfy, maybe the mattress was a bit too hard and the one single blanket for us two was a bit of a challenge at first but you can get used to such things. The pillows, well, I couldn´t wait to be back home again. Or well, a reason why it would make sense to bring your own.

The rest of the room was just the right size to store all the things we had and make up for not using the breakfast buffet once. The bathroom was pretty much a one man show, because there´s not been much space for two people – and the door had quite a gap on the bottom end, which I personally found a bit weird to be honest.

As mentioned, we tried the breakfats buffet once and I am not really fully convinced that it was worth it.

It was a basic breakfast, with nice sweet bread and different other things, but something was missing for me, yet I cannot put the finger on it. Maybe that´s also why it stayed a one time thing that we went there and the other mornings got ourselves some food and had breakfast on our room.

Amadeus Hotel (Frankfurt am Main)

A 4* hotel, now you might think “she´s become a snob” – but far from that, when I was n Frankfurt am Main for a concert, it was the only good sounding hotel close to the venue (Batschkapp) so I literally had no choice but book this hotel. Here I can first of advice you to compare the prices, they vary up to 10€ – hotel homepage and other pages on hotel comparison are here a good choice.

Let´s start with the location…Actually the hotel is really not close to the center, and if you arrive at mainstation, I´d advise you to not choose this hotel – getting there is a pain in the neck to be totally honest, unless you travel by car. But once you get there and enter the entrance hall, I personally felt a bit misplaced because of how it looks like as you can see on the photo. The gentleman on the reception was nice, and really helpful, just as you´d expect it to be.

Once in the room, I was surprised about how spacy is was – looked neat and clean and well sorted, with a tad old (but probably matching the normal visitors staying at the hotel) furniture when it comes to its style, but everything was there what you could´ve asked for. I was surprised that I was even to fully open both windows though I was on the second floor. Clearly a plus point, because I hate nothing more than not being able to do so.  The bed was having a good mattress, not too hard but also not too soft – I felt like in heaven when I laid down especially because the pillow was one of the best ones I ever laid on. seriously. My neck and shoulders immediately fell in love with it!

The bathroom wasn´t too big but totally okay for one person, wuld´ve also been okay for two people though two ppl in there at a time would´ve been a bit of a challenge I guess. The toilet was squeezed in between the shower and the wall, so not exactly that nice – and for people with more weight on their hips than me maybe uncomfortable. The shower was nice and big, enough room to comfortably shower without needing to worry about hitting your limbs anywhere.

The whole room was rather quiet, seems like the walls were either thick or nicely isolated, the night was really a good one- followed by the really expensive breakfast. They offer everything from bread, bread rolls, over yoghurt, cereals and warm stuff like eggs and bacon and such…but somehow I cannot really find justice for this price as I really had the same kind of breakfast for at least 4€ less. So somehow I personally would have a second thought about if you really want to have breakfast there or not.

Overall nevertheless it really was a good stay, yet nothing for those hoping to suck up on wifi internet, as you gotta pay extra for this. And no, this is no joke and one of the biggest no-gos for me if you aren´t even in a cheap hotel or so. I think nowadays it should be included, but well, shit happens.

So you gotta set priorities there, but I really was happy about my choice of hotel.

Prices normal/standard room
Single starting from 56€
Double starting from 57€
+ Breakfast 14,50 € per person

Series: Grand Designs

As my boyfriend and I are always on the hung for series to watch on Netflix, we also came across this one and – jokingly at first – started watching a first episode, but then kinda enjoyed it enough to keep watching all that you were able to watch on netflix.

Spoiler: not all episodes that actually exist are on there, but who knows, maybe they´ll be adding more with the time.

But now, let´s di into the content!

Episodes generally follow a regular format, with small variations depending on the progress of the build. At the beginning of an episode, McCloud meets the clients embarking on the project; he visits the site with them, and discusses the plans for the building. A computer visualisation or computer-aided design view of the intended project is shown.

And often already then you can notice that the ideas of house design are really big and vibrant, crazy and innovative – and the knowledge about what these ideas might cost them in the end are rather badly guessed. Already then I had quite a few laughs usually, because I would never choose approaches how many of those people do, but hey, I also haven´t decided on building a house (yet).

Once ground work commences, he visits the site periodically, following the build progress, noting any changes, hitches or delays; the build frequently runs over budget and completes later than scheduled.

And actually it is pretty much fun to guess how much of a delay they will be having or how much they get ove rtheir budget – I know it´s a cruel thing to do, but it´s just too inviting to not do this. Especially when they start killing their budget already during the first two months of building but are not willing to cut down on other parts of the house, it´s time for yet anotehr session of laughing an shaking your head – but it remains really entertaining throughout the whole process.

He visits again once the building is then made watertight, and the first and second fixes have commenced. He makes a final visit to the site in its finished or near-finished state, once the occupants have moved in. A tour of the house is then given; McCloud brings the episode to a close summarising the house, its construction, and his opinions.

And sometimes these visit open up surprising not-reached goals, issues and other things a normal watcher can laugh about, as their planning had been too astronomically wrong – especially when people themselves want to be the planner or project manager on site, though they never even had been doing anything close to such a job before.

Most, or nearly close to all of the shown projects, aka houses, are finished and shown as finished pieces of art (looking at the contruction material you mostly can either love it or hate it, being in between is pretty hard as they usually aren´t showing houses made of average materials). And then the results are pretty jaw-dropping, and kinda make you want such a house as well…

Therefore: if you are into watching people overestimating their skills, struggle, but in the end manage to build their house or want inspiration for your own house and enjoy architecture – go and check it out on Netflix!

Restaurant: Winter City

Let´s start with the entree, served first. I chose a salad with mozzarella stick and was a tad irritated about the beetroot pieces on it. Somehow I always connect negative tastes with this veggie, and was kinda taught differently this time because it nicely matched the rest of the salad that also had some slightly sweet vinegar or similar. Really good, thumbs up! Also the mozzarella sticks tasted good and clearly were selfmade as you tasted different and interesting herbs in them…was a nice starter, also the offered bread was quite good. Couldn´t have started any better!

My boyfriend´s salad was pretty much the same basic salad, also with beet root, but he had serrano ham on top of it and this ham was really one of the best ones that I had so far. Nice and salty, but yet not too salty and the combination of the rather sweet-ish salad with the salty touch of the ham – nice contrast, needless to say!

To be honest, I was really wondering what was coming next and also how much it would
be.
I had ordered an entrecote with gratin of the house with a honey sauce. Especially the sauce made me skeptical when I ordered it, but I wanted to try something new and this was the time – and the time was damned right!

The meat was just right and how I wanted it and in combination with they honey sauce – oh boy, what a foodporn! And this gratin…I wanted to dive into it and never stop eating anymore…just too good!

My boyfriend also had the gratin with honey sauce, but instead the Toulouse sausages, really traditional sausages you just get in the region. And they tasted really strong and intense, but in a really positive way – I was surprised I enjoyed the taste a lot, and clearly can just recommend everyone to try it. Especially with the honey sauce it was a good combination,  another perfect match!

And no, this wasn´t the end yet – my personal highlight was still yet to come. It´s the dessert, an ultimate bomb of chocolate, the “Moelleux au chocolate” – it is like a lava chocolate cake but clearly had been beating all of chocolate cakes or similar that I had so far.

Restaurant: Duck me

Yes, it´s a funny name and that´s how it all started basically. I had been looking for restaurants of all kinds for our time in Toulouse, and as this city seems to be the capital of any kind of duck dishes, it didn´t really surprise to come across this fast food restaurant (please mind the difference between trash food like certain burger chains and this food) and was surprised as people on Tripadvisor really rated it high.

Usually I really try to eat local food, but sometimes extraordinary things that might not be totally typical local food catch my eye and then I gotta check it out. And that´s also what my boyfriend and I did.

I ordered the duck burger with fries and a coke. And before talking about the food, I gotta talk about the coca cola – jeeez it is sweet here in France, it really brings you close to a sugar shock. But that´s just me maybe.
The fries were accompanied with ketchup and some special mayonese that tasted a tad like mustard. Really fascinating, really. And in a positive way. And the fries were really nicely done and freakin tasty, I loved them. especially together with the mayonese. Only thing missing was anything like a tiny fork or so as some fries were really tine and hard to grab.

The burger has an interesting bun, it really tasted a lot different to what you´re used from chain restaurants. I loved it, really. Less sesame, luckily, as I have never been a fan of that, but for others it might be lacking. The duck patty was really nie, too – especially because it had just the right doneness, I was fully happy. And what makes it even better – the ducks aren´t from whatever country, but from the area. And this is just cool!

Only downside maybe was the price, as the menu cost 10€. But looking at what you pay in other fastfood restaurants, you shouldn´t be complaining much. And for fast food this really was a “go to” – so if you´re in Toulouse and need a quick grab of good food, go to “Duck me” – not only the conceot is kinda adorable 😀

Movie: Musta Jää / Black Ice

Sometimes there is weird ways how you find out about movies and such, and this one is pretty much the best example. Because I got to know about this movie back when it was released because Apocalyptica´s Eicca Toppinen has been composing the music for it – including the title track called “Black Ice” (what a surprise, right?). Whilst I am totally in love with this album full of beautiful music that partially even made it onto Apocalyptica albums later on, it took me a while until I watched the movie for the first time.

Why? Because it is not that easy to find it legally when you are in Germany, when being located in Finland it is far easier, but anyways. Back then I watched it for the first time and really couldn´t make it in terms of finding a sense of it.

Anyways, before I get into detail in regards of my very own perception and some story telling, here´s the plot:

Saara is a middle-aged doctor who one day finds out that her architect-husband Leo is having an affair with a younger woman, Tuuli. Instead of revealing her true identity, Saara pretends to be someone else and makes friends with Tuuli. At the same time she is planning the best way to revenge her husband and his lover.
Source: IMDB

There seemingly is a totally dubbed German version, yet it really feels wong to have German language whilst the location could not be any less finnish, and the actors are Finnish and it feels simply wrong. So rather go for the Finnish version with English subtitles, it might make you feel less irritated somehow. And make it seem less hilarious, as this movie is anything but hilarious even though it is clearly containing (black) humor. But the main story simply isn´t funny.

Imagine you´re married and think things are going well but…you figure out it isnt´ as your husband cheats on you with a younger girl. You start researching, figure out she is a karate teacher and you get yourself a new identity (aka a new name and everything) and then start doing karate, and befriend her for the sake of getting to know her better so you can possibly find weaknesses and get rid off her. Sounds like a prolongued daily soap, doesn´t it? And to be fair, in many part it really feels like it, especially because it is so easy to foresee what will happen – or it is just me, having watched too many daily soaps so this way of thinking is too common to me. That wouldn´t surprise me either.

Anyways, I personally could never do that because if I knew my partner was cheating, I´d rip out the other woman´s eyes right away. Just being honest here, I dunnot think a “normal” person would invest so much time and effort to backstab that other woman. And totally forget to fight actually for the own husband – I mean, if all you do is investing time in that other bitch, you got no power and time left anymore for the person who in the end decides for one or the other. This whole kinda becomes clear when the woman´s husband dies after he races off, gets off the road and she tells him that since he is okay he can walk back home. Well, shit happens, he froze to death. For people not familiar with Finland and its temperatures in winter it might seem totally over the top, but believe me, this really is possible.

So that guy is gone, the girls start from new and whilst the former wife is rockingher life in the hospital , the other woman notices she is pregnant from the now dead man and due to unnice incidents, she falls down the stairs and is brought to hospital where the wife (working as gynaecologist) needs to take care of her and notices her even though she looks all different with changed hair color and colored contact lenses…

So you can kinda get an idea on the plot as such, but this is just one side of it. The actors and actresses really do well, especially because the two female main characters – so strong and good, thumbs up. The husband kinda…well he seems to be too much in the background, but maybe that is all intended, yet for me it seems somehow unrealistic.

And even though you might now think “oh she is all positive about the music because of that Apocalyptica dude” – let me get this straight. I enjoy this music as such, on the one hand. but on the other hand I also enjoy the music and how it is placed in the movie because I personally always enjoyed instrumentals to build up tension and make emotions and everything just seem/feel even stronger and this just works out perfectly well here.

Conclusion? I am not sure. It has an odd attraction that make me want to watch it again, though I really cannot put a finger on the reasons for that.

Restaurant: Hoh & Hoh

Actually my boyfriend and I hadn´t planned to be going there that soon, but as our fave asian restaurant had closed down and thus the reservation had been cancelled, we had to look for something else.

And since I insisted on actually wanting something Asian for dinner, my boyfriend had a look and we chose this restaurant as it is rather close to his place. It surely had been awarded by Schlemmerblock and such, but I am not really into these kinds of awards, because they don´t mean a thing to me. It doesn´t mean that their taste is my taste, but I went there with an open mind and – I was not disappointed.

we were welcome with some plum liqueur and that one really was tasty. Like, seriously. And that comes from me, someone who rarely drinks alcohol anymore. It was a nice small treat for the start, and the service was charming and humorous all along during the evening.

The menue is one where some poeple would say “ooh typical Asian” but it really has its perks to say the least.

I ordered crispy duck with beef (right in image), and this was so amazingly tasting, also because the sauce that I was given added a nice extra flavor to it without really killing the taste of the meat itself and the veggies. Amazing. Oh and they serve rice alongside the dishes, so it´s not just the meat. My boyfriend had ordered the left one on the photo and it was some kind of chickne with a sweet-spicy sauce – and man this sauce, totally in love with this one! So those two dishes clearly receive not just one thumb up but even all that you can find!

A last liqueur when paying, some joking whilst paying – I really felt comfortable there, really welcome, a warm athmosphere and in the interior design of the restaurant was also really looking nice.

Conclusion? Clearly a “go there!” and probably our new choice in terms of Asian restaurants as our fave one closed down.
